Military Advanced Education Guide Salutes Mississippi College

Mississippi College's Veterans Day activities on November 11, 2014 were organized by a new student-led group catering to men & women in uniform.

Jeremy Rawls believes Mississippi College deserves its billing as one of America’s military friendly institutions.

A former active duty Marine, the MC junior says he feels welcome on the Clinton campus.

Mississippi College professors and staff, Rawls said, “are very supportive and prove they care every day.”

The 32-year-old English major says the “Military Advanced Education” guide made the right call in December when recognizing MC among the nation’s “military-friendly” schools.

A seven-year Mississippi Army National Guard veteran, Rawls likes Mississippi College because of its friendly, close-knit academic atmosphere.

Editors with the guide size up USA institutions based on military culture, financial aid, flexibility, on-campus support and online services. Surveys went to more than 600 institutions, from community colleges to state universities to see how campuses stack up when serving men and women in uniform.

Enrolling over 5,000 students, Mississippi College is among 11 military friendly schools listed in the Magnolia State. Others include Hinds Community College, Mississippi State, Jackson State, Southern Miss, Delta State, William Carey University and Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

It was the second year in a row that Mississippi College is trumpeted in the handy higher education reference tool.

Mississippi College’s Army ROTC programs enroll nearly two dozen students. MC also offers assistance to about 200 veterans or their dependents, says veterans outreach coordinator Meg Shaw McCaa.

Earlier this year, MC launched a student organization catering to the needs of military men and women on campus, she noted. The Christian university also hosted a Veterans Day tribute in November with speakers like 3rd District U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper and Clinton Mayor Phil Fisher.
