Mississippi College Faces Rival Delta State in Blood Drive Battle

Blood donations save lives!

Last fall, Mississippi College supporters contributed 92 units of blood to defeat rival Delta State University in their annual battle for a good cause.

There’s another spirited rematch going on this fall between the two Gulf South Conference schools. On November 11-12, MC students and others in the university family get the opportunity to donate more blood. For the second straight year, Mississippi Blood Services will sponsor the MC-DSU competition on campuses in Clinton and Cleveland.

MBS officials say they plan to announce this year’s winner during the MC-Delta State football game in Clinton on November 14. Kickoff at Robinson-Hale Stadium that Saturday is 3 p.m.

With Thanksgiving holidays approaching, blood donations typically drop statewide, but blood usage doesn’t, says MBS staffer Tammy Bouchillon.

So the MC-DSU blood drive comes at a very good time.

Created in 1979, Flowood-based Mississippi Blood Services supplies blood to hospitals across the Magnolia State and serves medical facilities in Alabama, Tennessee and Arkansas. The blood could be utilized by cancer patients or for a number of hospital surgeries.

Donors to the Mississippi College-Delta State Heritage Bowl campaign will receive a free T-shirt. The winner of the 2015 blood drive gets to keep an MBS-Heritage Bowl trophy.

Other colleges are getting into the act this fall.

The University of Mississippi prevailed over Mississippi State and Southern Miss to capture the Transylvania Bowl blood drive trophy. Mississippi Valley State knocked off Southwestern Athletic Conference rivals Alcorn State and Jackson State in the Soul Bowl campaign.

The Mississippi College blood drive will run from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the MBS coach parked outside Alumni Hall that Wednesday and Thursday.

For many years, Mississippi College remains home to one of the state’s biggest blood donors.

An MC art instructor and graduate of the Baptist-affiliated university, Kent Mummert recorded his 600th blood donation on February 6, 2015. The Clinton resident regularly donates blood and platelets at MBS offices twice a month.
