Mississippi College Hosts Clinton Political Forum

Candidates for Clinton mayor and the city’s Board of Aldermen will join citizens at a political forum on the Mississippi College campus April 18.

The Clinton Chamber of Commerce will host the event beginning at 7 p.m. in Swor Auditorium. It’s a good opportunity for Clinton voters to size up the candidates just weeks before the May 7 party primaries.

Clinton Mayor Rosemary Aultman, a Republican, has decided not to seek re-election after 20 years in office, and there are five candidates seeking to be her successor.

Republicans qualifying for mayor are Hinds County District 4 supervisor Phil Fisher, Ward 1 Clinton Alderman Tony Hisaw, and former state College Board President Ricki Garrett. Democratic prospects seeking the post are Rodney C. Carter, Sr. and Jerry Kerner. Fifteen candidates are running for aldermen seats.

Jim Turcotte, president-elect of the Clinton Chamber of Commerce, is helping coordinate the event. The MC graduate also serves as the university’s vice president for enrollment management and dean of students.

“We anticipate about 400 citizens could attend the event since this is the first time we will elect a new mayor in 20 years,” Turcotte said. The Thursday evening program should conclude by 9:30 p.m.

Another city leader predicts a healthy turnout at the forum on the Clinton campus. It comes at a critical time for the city’s future.

“We are at a pivotal point for our city,” said T.J. McSparrin, the Clinton chamber’s executive director. “It’s important for citizens to get to know the candidates.”

Bringing years of experience as a radio announcer and as a business person with Merchants & Farmers Bank, George Broadstreet will serve as the program’s moderator. He’s active with the Clinton Chamber of Commerce and serves as chairman of the group’s Leadership Class.

Following the May 21 party primary runoffs, Clinton’s general election is set for June 4. Municipal elections are occurring all over Mississippi in May and June. The deadline for voters to register for the municipal elections will be April 6.
