Mississippi College Joins September Blood Drive

Mississippi College senior Eric Henderson, 21, donates blood at a Mississippi Blood Services drive on the Clinton campus in early September.

Scores of Mississippi College students donated blood at the first drive of the new academic year.

“This goes to a great cause,” said MC senior Eric Henderson, 21, as he contributed to the Mississippi Blood Services campaign Thursday.

A Shawreth men’s club member, Eric was among more than 80 MC people making blood donations during the two-day drive on the Clinton campus.

In early September, the Mississippi Blood Services bus parked outside Provine Chapel for as students and others lined up to give the gift of life. The five-hour drive on September 3 wraps up at 4 p.m.

“Blood is life – and people need blood,” said donor Krystan Drew, 18, an MC freshman from San Antonio, Texas.

Who needs donations? It could be millions of cancer patients or more than 70,000 Americans suffering from Sickle Cell disease. MBS donations go to hospitals across the Magnolia State.

The blood drive at Mississippi College wasn’t just limited to students.

Retired MC music professor James Sclater was among this week’s donors. The longtime Clinton resident and award-winning composer said he’s been a regular blood donor since 1972.

The Mississippi Blood Services staff will return to Mississippi College for the next major drive November 11-12.

That’s when Mississippi College competes against Gulf South Conference rival Delta State University to see what school produces the most blood donations.

The MC-DSU blood drive winner will be announced at the November 14 football game between the in-state teams at Robinson-Hale Stadium.
