Mississippi College Law School Hosts Unity Summit

MC School of Law

Threats to Americans’ rights of free speech, misuse of the judicial system, and hate speech around the nation will be among the topics explored at the inaugural Unity Summit.

Political leaders, attorneys, and prominent speakers are coming to the Mississippi College School of Law in Jackson for the March 13-14 conference.

Experts will discuss the First Amendment rights of free expression and worship along with the Second Amendment right to bear arms. In addition, conference guests will focus on the Seventh Amendment right to trial by jury. The Affordable Care Act’s impact on free expression of religion will also be on the agenda.

The conference is designed for people interested in “understanding and protecting our rights,” said attorney Hunter W. Lundy, the Unity Summit organizer. A 1980 graduate of the MC School of Law, Lundy is an attorney based in Lake Charles, La.

The conference has been approved for twelve Continuing Legal Education credits, including one hour of ethics in Mississippi. It’s been approved by the State Bars of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

Speakers will include U.S. Congressman Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania, IRS abuse expert Frank Sommerville and Tupelo trial lawyer Jim Waide. Other guest speakers include attorneys from Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Missouri and Washington, D.C.

“The country is plagued by violence, hate language and misuse of the judicial system,” Lundy said. “Moreover, well-intentioned laws have been misused and abused and that’s exacerbating the very problems they were designed to remedy.”

The conference at the MC School of Law Student Center is designed to educate lawyers, legislators and interested citizens about key legal issues impacting the nation.

The Continuing Legal Education fee is $500. The general admission cost is $200. The program begins with a 7:30 a.m. breakfast on Thursday March 13.
