Mississippi College Singers Showcased at Upcoming Concerts
January 23, 2014
Music lovers are invited to see the Mississippi College Singers perform at four winter concerts in metro Jackson.
The 55-member MC student group is booked for a January 26 concert at St. Columb’s Episcopal Church in Ridgeland. The Sunday evening concert at the church at 550 Sunnybrook Road begins at 6 p.m.
The performance comes on the heels of the MC Singers January 19 well-received concert at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall. The MC Singers combined their voices with eight other Mississippi choral groups from such schools as Clinton High, Germantown High, Jackson Prep, Meridian High and the Mississippi School for the Arts in Brookhaven.
“The New York concert was amazing,” says MC Music Department secretary Dottie Serio. “The choir represented Mississippi College well. The composer of the music was in attendance as this was the world premiere of his work.”
Composer Dan Forrest joined others in the audience applauding as the Mississippi student groups performed his new work “Requiem for the Living.”
The MC Singers are scheduled for three more concerts in February and March, including:
--February 16 at Galloway United Methodist Church in Jackson at 6 p.m.
--February 23 at Crossgates United Methodist Church in Brandon at 6 p.m.
--March 2 at Provine Chapel at Mississippi College in Clinton at 4 p.m.
All four Mississippi concerts are free and open to the public.
In the spring, the MC Singers directed by music professor Jamie Meaders will perform at a Southern convention of American choral conductors in Jacksonville, Florida. The group also will travel thousands of miles to South Africa in May for a series of concerts. Students are seeking to of raise $4,000 each that is required for their second journey to South Africa in recent years.
