Mississippi Wind Symphony Performs Free Concerts

A Mississippi College flavor will be in the air when the Mississippi Wind Symphony performs two free concerts in June.

A music professor at MC and director of the Christian university’s bands, Craig Young launched the Mississippi Wind Symphony in 2001 and remains its conductor today.

Opening the group’s 15th season, the symphony’s initial summer concert is titled “All About the Dance.” The event is booked for June 9 at St. Joseph High School in Madison. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. that Tuesday evening.

Patrons can expect the 42-member group to perform a rich mixture of tunes, including Bernard Rogers’ high-energy “Dances with Swords” as well as Malcolm Arnold’s exciting “English Dances.”

From “Vientos y Tangos” by composer Michael Gandolfi to Renaissance dances by Giles Farnaby to “Riders for the Flag” by legendary American composer John Philip Sousa, the concert features a rich smorgasbord of musical selections.

The talented musical artists on stage will include Angela Willoughby, who chairs the Mississippi College Music Department on the Clinton campus. Several adjunct MC professors are members of the group.

Mississippians who miss the concert by these wood musicians and percussionists have another opportunity in a few weeks. The Mississippi Wind Symphony’s second summer concert is scheduled for June 30 at St. Joseph High School in Madison. The program begins at 7:30 p.m.
