New Student Leaders Elected at Mississippi College

Rowan St. John of Mesquite, Texas is the newly elected Student Government Association president at Mississippi College.

An Eagle Scout who loves snow skiing and the music of Irish rockers U2, Rowan St. John also believes in service as a Mississippi College student.

St. John will get many opportunities to serve the Blue & Gold as MC’s newly elected Student Government Association president.

His new leadership post follows a successful stint as SGA vice president.

“I believe the SGA leads through service and we should strive to help through any means necessary,” says the 21-year-old from Mesquite, Texas. “SGA needs to help and assist many of the other campus organizations.”

A Texas Rangers fan from a thriving Dallas suburb, the finance major will lead a strong SGA leadership team in 2016-17.

St. John will get help from energetic SGA colleagues like newly elected vice president Brayden West of Brandon. “My hope is that I, alongside every student in SGA will be able to make Mississippi College a better place than how I found it,” West says.

A 2013 Brandon High graduate he served SGA as a senator the past three years. Brayden is a biology/medical sciences major.

The new officers take over at the end of April at the 5,100-student Baptist-affiliated university.

Outgoing SGA President Mary McRae of Tishomingo thinks MC students elected an extraordinary group.

“All of the new officers are passionate about their jobs. I know that each of them will perform their best,” McRae says. “SGA will be able to get things done efficiently.”

Mary is pretty familiar with one of the newest officers. Her younger sister, Annsley McRae, a marketing major, was recently elected secretary. In her spare time, Annsley enjoys shooting photos at scores of MC Choctaws athletic contests – from football to basketball.

Others elected to key posts include: Austin McCarty of Brandon, treasurer, Mary Beth Hughes of Denham Springs, Louisiana, Supreme Court chief justice, and Bonnie Slattery of Houston, Texas, chair of the Campus Activities Board. John Williams, a biology/medical sciences major from Neely, Mississippi, will serve as chairman of SGA’s Christian Development group.

The MC vice president for enrollment services and dean of students, Jim Turcotte applauds the new SGA leaders.

“The officers for next year have proven themselves to be strong leaders. We expect to see a lot of good things to come from their work,” says Turcotte, a former SGA president on the Clinton campus. “I am excited to come alongside them to make Mississippi College even better going forward.”
