Students Boost Mississippi College Blood Drive

Mississippi College sophomore Tanner Carter was among dozens of students donating blood Wednesday on the Clinton campus.

"It is an easy and convenient way to help people," Carter said as other students lined up to give blood at Alumni Hall.

A 19-year-old student from Petal, Carter is a pre-med major at the Baptist-affiliated school. This is his second year in a row to participate in the Mississippi Blood Services drive. This week's campaign at MC that wraps up Thursday.

After MBS staffer Ruby Holliday was on hand to assist with his donation, Carter received a free MBS T-shirt. Students were also eligible to win $25 Wal-Mart gift cards.

The drive attracted 54 MC students on Wednesday and others are signed up to give on Thursday.

Mississippi Blood Services typically needs 250 pints of blood daily to serve 49 hospitals around the Magnolia State, said Tammy Bouchillon, the MBS senior marketing representative.

MC joins several other area colleges - from Jackson State University to Belhaven College - that are conducting blood drives this fall. "All of the colleges participate," she said.

The Mississippi College campaign is the first one this week in Clinton. On Friday Sept. 11, the City of Clinton will host an MBS drive at Brighton Park. On Wednesday, MBS staffers were also busy in the field conducting a drive at St. Matthew's Methodist Church in Madison.

Bouchillon says the blood drive this week will provide a nice boost because supplies usually run low after long holiday weekends. Students who make blood donations are urged to drink plenty of fluids the next couple of days and avoid strenuous exercise for 12 hours.

Students, faculty and staff at MC have another opportunity to give the gift of life. The next blood drive on the Clinton campus will be Nov. 18-19 at Alumni Hall from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
