Susan Musselwhite Receives Distinguished Staff Member Award at Mississippi College

Susan Musselwhite remains an extraordinary player in the Mississippi College family as assistant director of athletics.

Her hard work at the key post over the past nine years and dedication as the athletic department’s chief compliance officer is getting noticed.

At Mississippi College’s spring 2015 commencement, Musselwhite received the Van “Doc” Quick Distinguished Staff Award at her alma mater. The honor recognizes her stellar service for nearly 20 years to the Baptist-affiliated university in Clinton.

The citation noted her tireless efforts to help Mississippi College athletics transition back to NCAA Division II and return to the potent Gulf South Conference in the Fall of 2014.

It’s not the first major achievement for the Southaven, Mississippi native and definitely won’t be her last at the 5,000-student university. Like the late Doc Quick, a beloved Mississippi College administrator for decades, Susan practically bleeds Blue and Gold.

Passionate about MC Choctaws sports since her arrival as a student in 1990, Musselwhite earned her bachelor of education degree from MC in December 1994. The Flora resident was awarded her master’s of education at the Christian university in August 1996.

A standout on the diamond as a Lady Choctaws softball player for four seasons, Musselwhite set numerous hitting and pitching records. During her splendid 11-year career as head coach of the Lady Choctaws softball team, beginning in 1996, Susan set a school record with 203 victories. It includes winning more than 20 games in seven seasons. She was inducted into the Mississippi College Sports Hall of Fame in April 2006.

After completing her successful softball head coaching career, Musselwhite moved up the ranks to become assistant athletic director.

As part of her administrative responsibilities, Susan oversees coaches and more than 400 student-athletes in the areas of rules, recruiting and internal matters, including the guidelines of the NCAA, the Gulf South Conference and Mississippi College. She gets out of her office at the A.E. Wood Coliseum to watch as many MC athletic contests as possible, no matter what the sport.

Education professor Tom Williams, the university’s faculty athletic representative, applauds Musselwhite’s work and the difference she’s making.

“She was a great choice for the award, no doubt,” says Williams, who also serves as MC’s energy education specialist.

Everything that comes her way, whether it is linked to NCAA rules, organizing special athletic events, fundraising or long-term planning, Susan never runs away from hard work. “She is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done,” Williams said.

Musselwhite holds other titles at Mississippi College as senior woman’s administrator and serves as an instructor in the Department of Kinesiology. She gives back to her community as a Clinton Parks and Recreation Advisory Board member since 2005.

The citation naming Susan Musselwhite as the 2014-15 recipient of the Doc Quick Staff Award summed up her strengths. “She is the personification of Christian values and principles and is an outstanding leader that helps make Mississippi College the special place that it is.”
