Youth Summit Set for Mississippi College

Miss Mississippi Jasmine Murray

About 500 outstanding high school students will get advice from mayors across the Magnolia State and sharpen their leadership skills at a conference at Mississippi College.

The Mississippi Municipal League’s Youth Leadership Summit is set for March 6-7 on the Clinton campus. It is the first time MC has hosted the annual event.

Jasmine Murray, the 2014 Miss Mississippi, will deliver the keynote speech at MC’s Swor Auditorium on Saturday March 7 beginning at 8:45 a.m. The 22-year-old Columbus native is a Mississippi State University student.

An extraordinary singer and role model, Murray won over the judges as a finalist on the 8th season of the TV show “American Idol.” She also showed off her talents to millions of TV viewers as a 2014 Miss America contestant last September. Jasmine has more than 7,500 Twitter followers.

Mississippi Municipal League officers including President Alton Shaw, the mayor of Wesson, and other city leaders will attend to share their insights with hundreds of high school students.

“We are honored to host the conference,” says Jim Turcotte, MC vice president for enrollment management and dean of students. “These are some of the best and brightest students from our state.”

Conference proceedings begin with an opening reception at the restaurant 303 Jefferson in the heart of Olde Towne Clinton on Friday evening. The City of Clinton, Main Street Clinton, the Clinton Chamber of Commerce and Mississippi College are teaming up to host the reception. It begins at 7 p.m.

Conference breakout sessions include topics like making the transition from high school to college, promoting healthy lifestyles, and avoiding the dangers of texting while driving.

Admissions director Kyle Brantley and other university leaders will make the rounds to make the visiting students feel right at home.
