Assistant Professor - Department of History and Political Science

The Department of History and Political Science at Mississippi College is seeking applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of History to direct the Social Studies Education program, beginning in the Fall 2023 semester. A Ph.D. in History, with specialization in world or continental European history, is preferred. A doctorate in Education with a Master’s degree in History will be considered. A candidate with only a Master’s degree in History will be considered for a non-tenure track position. Candidates with degree in hand will receive priority consideration. Teaching experience at the secondary level is required, while a teaching license and/or experience working with student teachers would be a plus.

The Social Studies Education program director will teach Social Studies Methods, Geography, and History courses. The successful candidate will also supervise student teachers in cooperation with K-12 teachers in schools across the Jackson metro area. The program director will train students in pedagogy, work with colleagues in the Department of Teacher Education and Leadership, write reports for state and national accreditation, and collaborate with regional organizations. Other faculty responsibilities include a normal teaching load of four courses per semester, student advising, curriculum and program development, participation in departmental, college, and university governance structures, and active involvement in scholarly activities.
