Who does this apply to?

This document applies to all official Mississippi College Web sites.  A Mississippi College Web site is defined as any Web site or Web page created by and representative of Mississippi College entities, including its schools, departments, and administrative offices.  Each department is responsible for ensuring that its content is in accordance with the guidelines.

Any questions regarding the implementation of these guidelines and procedures on University Web sites may be directed to the University Director of Web Communications.

Purpose of this document

The Mississippi College Web site exists as a resource that is used to represent Mississippi College to a wide range of audiences.  For many, it provides a first impression of what MC is all about; for others is it a tool to help to them to succeed during their college career.  For this reason, the Web site must clearly and accurately reflect the goals of the institution.

The Mississippi College Web Guidelines and Procedures have been created in order to promote consistency, accessibility, accuracy, and professionalism on all University Web pages and/or Web sites.  Adherence to these guidelines and procedures will ensure that Mississippi College’s Web presence accurately reflects the quality of the institution itself.

All official Mississippi College Web sites or Web pages must adhere to the following guidelines regarding styles.

Custom Designs for Academic Departments

Administrative departments are required to use the main Mississippi College design template. Schools, departments, and other academic units are permitted to have designs that differ from the main Mississippi College template. All custom web design projects must be coordinated through the Office of Public Relations.

Schools and academic departments that wish to redesign their site should contact the Director of Web Communications to begin planning the redesign project. In such instances, the process will take place as follows:

  1. The Office of Public Relations will directly manage the redesign project in coordination with the academic department.
  2. The academic department will be charged for the redesign, but at a rate significantly lower than that of fully outsourcing the design. Contact us for specific rates.
  3. The Office of Public Relations may outsource certain portions of the redesign, depending on the needs of the project.
  4. The Office of Public Relations will integrate the site into our content management system and train a department representative of usage of the CMS.

Any questions regarding this process should be sent to the Director of Web Communications.

If an academic chooses not to have the Office of Public Relations manage their web design project:

  1. The design must still be approved by the public relations office before it can be launched (we recommend submitting the site for approval as early as possible in the redesign process).
  2. The site must be hosted on Mississippi College servers. Hosting requirements for the project should be confirmed with the public relations office at the beginning of the design process.
  3. The department will be fully responsible for maintaining the site (FTP access will be provided to the department if necessary).

In all cases, the Office of Public Relations should be notified before the design process begins.

Required design elements in custom designs

  • the name "Mississippi College" and the name of the department in the header
  • a link to the Mississippi College homepage on every page in the site
  • any other items as specified by the Office of Public Relations


Body Copy

The following fonts are approved for use within body copy on University sites:


  • Open Sans (Google)
  • Lato (Google)
  • Arial
  • Helvetica


  • Droid Serif (Google)
  • Esteban (Google)
  • Alegreya (Google)
  • Garamond
  • Georgia

No other fonts may be used for body copy unless they are approved by the Office of Public Relations. Usage of other fonts used within headings and titles must be approved by the Office of Public Relations.


HTML heading tags (h1, h2, h3) should be used to display titles and headings within your content.  These tags will be beneficial for organization of content, consistency of style and search engine optimization. The styles for these tags can be specified in a central CSS file in order to simplify the application of styles throughout various pages.


Hyperlinks should be the same font and font size as body copy, except for navigational links. With regards to color, all links should stand out as links, but should still remain dark enough to be easily readable.

Navigation & Page Titles

Navigation should be clear and consistent.  Top-level menu items should remain the consistent throughout all pages within the site.  In certain instances, the top-level menu may be in a different location that the homepage, but it should still have the same menu items.  Sub-menus should remain consistent across their respective pages.  Pages should only exist in one location within the navigational hierarchy.

All pages should have an HTML title that includes the page name.  Acceptable separators include a pipe (|) or a dash (-).  Usage of the pipe as a separator is recommended.

Images used on official Mississippi College websites must be provided or approved by the Office of Public Relations. Web images should be compressed to a resolution of 72 dpi.  Images should never be scaled up using HTML.  They should be sized properly using image editing software.  All images should have an HTML alt attribute.  Images used for design/decorative purposes only may have an empty alt attribute.

Logo Usage

The logo, which consists of the “bell tower” graphic and the wordmark, should not be edited in any way, except for resizing.  When resizing, the aspect ratio of the logo should be maintained.  Drop shadows, bevels, and other effects should not be added to the logo.

Code Standards

All Mississippi College Web sites should be coded using HTML5.  HTML code should be validated at

Browser/Device Compatibility

Official University pages and sites should be checked for compatibility in the following browsers:

  • Internet Explorer 7.0+
  • Firefox
  • Safari
  • Google Chrome

In addition, as sites should be designed using responsive design methodology and should render appropriately on mobile devices.


All official university websites must fall under the domain as a subdirectory as a subdomain of  Appropriate examples include:


New domain names should not be registered or used for official university websites.


All official university websites must utilize Google Analytics.

External Links

Any links to sites not hosted on the domain must be related to the University's vision of academic excellence and commitment to the cause of Christ and must not imply endorsement by the University. 

Downloadable Documents

Unless documents should need to be edited, they should not be posted in proprietary, editable formats, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, etc. unless the file must remain editable to the end-user. Documents should Web-optimized PDF.


MP3 is the recommended format for audio files posted on University sites.  44Khz, 16 bit encoding is recommended in order to maintain quality while keeping the file size as small as possible. Audio files should never be played on a Web page unless action is taken by a user to do so.

Video stream services such as YouTube and Vimeo are the recommended format for posting videos to University Web pages. Downloadable videos may be provided in MP4 or MOV format.

Outside of videos, Flash should not be used.

The following editorial guidelines apply to all University Web sites and Web pages.


All official University Web sites must present information using the highest editorial standards (spelling, punctuation, grammar, style, etc.). Web sites that contain editorial errors will be requested by the Office of Public Relations to make the necessary corrections.

Currency and Accuracy

All pages should be reviewed regularly to ensure that they are current and accurate.  Links (especially links to sites) should be checked regularly to ensure functionality.  Outdated pages should be deleted from the server.


All official University Web sites and pages should adhere to the Mississippi College Privacy Statement.  A link to this information may be found on the footer of the Mississippi College home page.

Times and Dates

Times should be written in the following format: 8:30 a.m., 10:30 p.m.  
24-hour time should not be used.

When found within body copy or when used alone or with only a year, the month should be spelled out.  Only in places where space is limited should months be abbreviated.

Postal abbreviations (e.g., MS) should only be used for addresses or in locations where space is limited.

Phone Numbers

All phone numbers on University Web sites should use only periods for separation.  Parenthesis and dashes should never be used.


In order to maintain consistency and communicate clearly throughout the website, academic department sites are required to include the following information:

Degree Programs

Listing of all undergraduate, graduate, and certificate degree programs, including specialization areas, with a description of each. This information should be listed on separate pages according to study level (undergraduate, graduate, or certificate).


All non-adjunct faculty within a department should be listed on the site. The listing should include each faculty member's name, title, phone number, email address, office location, and photo.

General Contact Information

The department's main phone number and MC box number should be listed in the footer of the homepage or on a separate page with contact information.
