Update on COVID-19 Cases

Dear MC Family,

This week, for the first time since we returned to campus, we have seen an uptick in COVID-19 cases at MC. With the current case numbers increasing both locally and nationally, we have doubled our testing on campus, and positivity rates remain low.

Over the past week, 20 members of our community – 18 students and two employees – have tested positive and are now in isolation. Fortunately, all of them are reporting no symptoms or mild symptoms.

I want you to know that none of these community members did anything wrong, nor did they violate any of the safety procedures we have in place on campus. Those who tested positive were members of both men’s and women’s athletic teams, and groups of students who gathered to share meals. Athletic practices and eating are two activities that allow masks to be temporarily removed.

We’ve taken immediate steps to mitigate the spread of the virus:

  • MC’s contact tracing team quickly identified students and community members who have been in contact with those who tested positive. Those who may have been exposed are now in precautionary quarantine.
  • The athletic programs that were affected have been paused as a precaution.
  • As a further precaution, MC will pause dining-in at all campus food outlets, including the cafeteria, Chick-Fil-A, and others.  These facilities will remain open for grab-and-go meals. You may still eat at outside tables, but with a limit of two people per table.

I’m sharing this information with you not to cause you to worry, but because we promised you that we would be transparent with you at all times as we navigate this pandemic together.

Please continue to observe all of the precautions we’ve put into place. Testing is available for members of our campus community. Please contact the COVID-19 hotline at 601-925-3030 or to schedule free testing. Most importantly, please continue to pray for our community and the 20 members who have tested positive.

We have just 27 days left in this semester. With your help and diligence, we will finish strong, healthy, and together.
