Frequently Asked Questions
What is changing?
One of the largest changes for our students this fall will be that individuals will have the opportunity to go through Recruitment before our fall semester begins. This is something new for Mississippi College, and we think that this is our best option on how to move forward due to COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines. Recruitment will begin on Wednesday, August 5th and end on Sunday, August 9th, with Potential New Members moving on campus in staggered time slots on Wednesday, August 5, 2020. These students will be sent an email with move in times and details closer to their Move-In Day. The process of Recruitment will look similar to the past, just condensed and centered around keeping in guidelines with social distancing.
What is a PNM?
The term PNM (potential new member) will be heard or seen a lot, but simply means individuals that are going through Recruitment with the potential of joining a social organization.
What is the price of Recruitment?
$115. This covers food at Parties, extra meals in the Caf due to moving in before Meal Plans start, Recruitment Shirt, and this will help supplement the Organizations to be able to host so many events in such a short time frame. After July 10th, this cost will go up to $125 per person.
How will I know my schedule for Recruitment?
Each PNM will receive a colored wristband. These wristbands will be in each PNMs dorm room along with their detailed schedule, additional information, and tips for going through Recruitment. These colored wristbands will be your Recruitment Groups. PNMs will be given a schedule based on the color of their group. These are the times they go to the coke and recruitment parties and must sign in using your color. PNMS must have their wristbands on throughout recruitment. Keep in mind, due to COVID-19 almost all of our events will be outside, but we will do everything we can to keep everyone cool and provide water for everyone.
What if I'm an athlete, can I go through Recruitment?
Absolutely! Recruitment finishes the day of Fall Athlete Move In, so those wanting to go through Recruitment will move in early with the rest of the PNMs and participate normally.
How do I become a New Member?
PNMs must go to all required events during Recruitment in order to fill out a Pref Card on Sunday, August 9th. This Pref Card allows the Council Presidents to know what organizations the PNMs are most interested in being a part of after going through Recruitment. Filling out this pref card does not mean individuals will get into their 1st pref, but MC utilizes a system of Mutual Selection which gives both the PNMs and the Organizations a preference on New Membership. We do not cut here at MC, so if a PNM fills out a pref card they will be placed in an organization- even if it is their second, third, fourth or fifth pref. PNMS find out which organization they will become a New Member of at Squeal Night (females) or Reveal Night (males). They will then begin going through the New Member Process.
What is a New Member and what is the New Member Process?
A new member is an individual going through the process to become an active member of an organization. New Membership looks different for every organization, but is a time commitment for the duration of the process. Our Vice Presidents and New Member Chairs will work with athletes to ensure that they are able to do both as well as working with each New Member to ensure they are able to fulfill other commitments like classes, on or off campus jobs, or previous commitments. We do ask our New Members to be committed to their organization’s process and make it a priority to be at as many events as they can. The New Member Process is up to 6 weeks long- each organization has varying lengths of their New Member Process.
How will Actives be involved in Recruitment?
We will allow a select number of actives to move in on Tuesday, August 4th to help in the planning and execution of Recruitment. With that being said, not all actives will be allowed to participate in the Recruitment events due to Social Distancing guidelines in place by the CDC.
What are we doing to ensure your safety during Recruitment?
First, our number one priority is the safety and wellbeing of our students! Therefore, we are following all social distancing guidelines and constantly monitoring COVID-19 updates.
Our first step in ensuring our student’s safety will be having all Recruitment events outside and limiting the amount of people who will attend each party at a time.
We understand that being outside in August it will be HOT, so we have large event tents that will be set up to provide shade and cover from the sun.
We will also be providing bottled water for everyone at all Recruitment events.
All students will follow MC's current guidelines for masks, etc.
Between every Recruitment event our team will be cleaning and sanitizing any and all surfaces, chairs, tables, etc.
