Dyslexia Conference Booked at Mississippi College

Educators, parents, students and prominent speakers are coming to Mississippi College for the annual spring dyslexia conference March 31.

The MC Dyslexia Education and Evaluation Center will host the event at the B.C. Rogers Student Center on the Clinton campus.

Last spring's event attracted about 150 visitors to MC. The cost of the one-day event in Anderson Hall is $50. There's an additional $5 charge for those who will receive continuing education credit. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The conference will conclude at 3:15 p.m.

Cena Holifield, director of the 3D School in Petal, and Elesha McCarty will serve as the morning speakers. Breakout sessions will bring other dyslexia experts to the Clinton campus. The meetings will also attract MC students planning to enter the field.

Topics to be covered include autism, the use of technology for dyslexia students and increasing fluency. A panel of parents will share their insights about dyslexic students.

Dyslexia is a neurologically-based disorder that impairs one's ability to read, write and spell.

The MC dyslexia center opened in 2007 and has received grants from such groups as the Phil Hardin Foundation of Meridian and the Robert Hearin Support Foundation of Jackson.
