Energy Savings Are Huge at Mississippi College

President Lee Royce and Steve Stanford, vice president for administration and government relations, display a big check showing MC's energy savings tops $1.2 million.

Energy savings of more than $1.2 million are reported at Mississippi College.

As America recognizes October as Energy Awareness Month, MC leaders are delighted to see the campus savings plan is working well.

Shutting down computers, turning off lights, recycling paper and taking other steps, MC employees boosted the energy savings program first launched in July 2012. The $1,227,000 saved is shifted to benefit academic programs and other university needs.

“Being good stewards of both our money and environment gives us a great sense of satisfaction,” says Tom Williams, who oversees Mississippi College energy savings plans.

MC has saved over 6.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity and over 48,500,000,000 BTUs of natural gas over the past three years, reports show.

MC President Lee Royce and Steve Stanford, vice president for administration and government relations, were delighted to display the big check reflecting the dollars saved.

“The MC administration is to be commended for implementing an intensive campus-wide energy conservation program,” Williams said. It will enable the 5,152-student university to avoid millions of dollars in energy costs in future years, he added.

Physical plant staff members led by Billy Thornton work closely with employees at the Clinton campus and School of Law in Jackson. As a result, MC equipment is used efficiently, Williams noted.

But energy savings goes way beyond the involvement of a few people.

“Everyone must take their responsibility to save energy,” Williams said. “Energy conservation is our best investment for the future.”

To help do more, Williams offers a few tips:

-- Turn thermostats down before leaving school for the day.

-- Report water leaks, running toilets or dripping sinks.

-- Report malfunctioning equipment or equipment running when it should be off.
