Leland Speed Library Sponsors Annual Book Sale

More than 10,000 books will be up for grabs at the Leland Speed Library’s third annual book sale Sept. 24-25.

Mississippi College librarians and fellow staffers are busy gathering books, vinyl records and other neat items for the fall event at Alumni Gym.

“We invite the MC family and our friends in metro Jackson to turn out in big numbers to make the 2010 book sale another success story for the Leland Speed Library,” says library director Kathleen Hutchison.

The event opens on Friday Sept. 24 and it is geared strictly to MC faculty and staff from 8 a.m. until noon. Then, the Alumni Gym event will be open to all comers from noon until 6 p.m.  On Saturday, Sept. 25, hours for the big sale will be from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. with all customers welcome.

Last year’s MC library book sale raised more than $6,000.

Funds raised will help enhance MC library resources and services, Hutchison said.

The book sale will also feature a silent auction, including such items as a full leather bound Encyclopedia Britannica set from the 1870s and the Mississippi Code, circa 1942.

The Leland Speed Library has experienced a makeover in the past year. Changes include rebuilt circulation desks, both upstairs and downstairs, the addition of art from MC faculty members and, a coffee shop that soon will serve Starbucks. Fresh coats of paint and new furniture also have given the library a new look.

Hutchison says the turnout from the MC family has been great, but would like to see more folks from the greater Jackson area take advantage of the many bargains at the book sale. The Friends of the Leland Speed Library organization welcomes all book lovers in Central Mississippi to participate.
