MC To Host Summer 2008 Music Camp

Dozens of students from Mississippi and Louisiana are signing up for summer music camp at Mississippi College in July.

Directed by MC music faculty members Carol Joy Sparkman and Robert Knupp, the third annual camp is set for July 6-12 on the Clinton campus.

Students from grades 7-12 will study voice, enhance their keyboarding skills, attend classes and take part in an honors recital at the end of the week.

Sponsored by the MC Department of Music, the cost is $350 per camper, including a stay in MC residence halls, meals and other expenses.

Students from Jackson, Madison, Eupora, Greenwood, Corinth, the Gulf Coast, Baton Rouge, and Metairie, La. are among the more than 30 campers already signed up. It's not too late to turn in an application. But parents are encouraged to make reservations now.

An accompanist and music instructor, Sparkman recently returned to Mississippi College after taking a European concert tour in May with the MC Singers. She's in big demand at the moment. An MC graduate, Sparkman is also working with music camps this summer in Rome, Ga. and at Roosevelt State Park at Morton in Scott County.

The MC music camp will also give students a opportunity to learn about musical theatre, improvisation, music history and theory, and give them an introduction to the pipe organ. MC faculty will blend in on other areas of the arts.

The MC music camp is a proven recruiting tool. A number of the camp alumni end up enrolling at the Baptist-affiliated school as full-time undergraduates, Sparkman said.

Mississippi College expects to welcome more than 10,000 youngsters to its camps on the Clinton campus this summer. The first big wave of campers starts in early June. Students also can upgrade their baseball, basketball, soccer and cheerleading skills as well as their knowledge of the Bible during the summer camps at MC. Just under 10,000 kids attended summer camps at MC in 2007.
