Mississippi College Hosts Summer Music Camp

Mississippi College expects a record number of 62 students to attend its fifth annual summer music camp in July.

Students from such cities as Jackson, Hattiesburg, Starkville, Brandon, Clinton and across state lines in Louisiana are booked for the five-day residential camp. The camp opens with registration on July 4 and wraps up Saturday July 10.

“The camp offers a glimpse into the curriculum of a music major in an encouraging atmosphere,” said MC Department of Music instructor Carol Joy Sparkman.

Geared to students in grades 7-12, the camp offers classes in theory, music history, music technology, piano and voice. In addition, the students also experience choir and music theatre workshops.

Mississippi College faculty members Robert Knupp and Sparkman directed the Department of Music's first camp in 2006 when 36 students attended. There were 59 students signed up last summer. They come from public, private and home schools. This year's group will be the largest in its five years. If there are more who still want to sign up, "we're prepared to take up to 70 this year," said Sparkman.
