Relay for Life Gears Up on the Mississippi College Quad

Farra Collins is anxious to see April 9 come at Mississippi College. That's the starting date for MC's annual Relay for Life on the Quad.

A 21-year-old MC senior from Madison, Collins is one of the organizers of this year's relay that raised $12,000 on the Clinton campus in 2009.

"I have a team and will be walking," Collins said Monday. "I'm pretty excited about it and ready for it to get here."

The event to benefit the fight against cancer gets personal for the MC business administration major. Her mother died of breast cancer eight years ago. Her aunt died of cancer seven years ago.

Collins expects at least 15 MC teams will participate. The goal is to equal or exceed last year's fund-raising, added the Madison Central High graduate.

Organizers are also trying to raise awareness about early detection and prevention of cancer. They say 50 percent of cancer is preventable. Relay for Life events began around the nation in 1985 when a surgeon in Tacoma, Washington ran around a track for 24 hours to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

The MC relay will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday April 9 and finish up at 7 a.m. Saturday April 10. MC students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate.

For those who miss out, there's a Relay for Life at Liberty Park in Madison beginning 6 p.m. April 30. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. Nationwide, there are more than three million Americans involved in Relay for Life races.

In case of rain, the MC Relay for Life will move to Alumni Gym. For more information, go to www.relayforlife.org/hindsyouth or call Farra Collins at 601.540.2423 or Alex Mann at 205.495.6660.
