Storm Knocks Down Tree and Power Lines at MC

Physical Plant Director Glenn Worley assesses storm damage on College Street.
A summer storm packing high winds and heavy rain knocked down a large tree and power lines Thursday afternoon on the Mississippi College campus. Emergency crews urged MC students, staff and others to avoid the area on College Street, not far from Self Hall, home of the School of Business.

The storm leveled a large oak tree and brought down power lines. The power was knocked out in portions of Clinton and some people were expected to be without electricity for several hours.

MC Department of Public Safety staffers and Entergy crews asked people to stay away from the site near an uprooted tree that also rested near Farr Hall, home of MC's ROTC program. It was the last day of the second summer session at MC with a number of students taking final exams.

"There are several power lines down. People should stay at home," said a dispatcher at the Clinton Police Department "Entergy is trying to fix it" but it will take time, he added.

There is a power line down near the Cups coffee shop about a block from the MC campus, along the railroad tracks in Clinton and along College Street, he said. Electricity should be out for several hours in Clinton, the dispatcher said.

There have been power outages in the Leland Speed Library, at Aven Hall and other portions of the MC campus, said a dispatcher for the MC Department of Public Safety. It was tough for some drivers to make it through a maze of fallen power lines and trees late this afternoon in Clinton.

Portions of Monroe Street and College Street were blocked to traffic. There have been no injuries reported as a result of the storm damage. Earlier there were reports of strong wind gusts through parts of metro Jackson.

The storm and strikes of lightning forced Mississippi College campers to suspend their outdoor activities and move indoors for the rest of the day. For more information, contact the MC Department of Public Safety at 601.925.3204.
