Beacon Magazine at Mississippi College Shares Awards With Hederman Brothers and Kirkpatrick & Porch Creative

The “Beacon” magazine published in the Summer of 2012 received the “Best of Category” and the “Award of Excellence” awards.

Mississippi College’s “Beacon” is sharing regional awards with Hederman Brothers, the MC alumni magazine’s printer in Ridgeland and Kirkpatrick & Porch Creative, the publication’s creative services firm.

Leaders of the Printing Industry Association of the South presented graphic awards at the organization’s 39th annual convention in Destin, Florida earlier this summer. The non-profit trade association assists the industry to expand in a seven-state region. The group serves 520 companies, big and small, in an area that includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

Published twice per year, Mississippi College’s “Beacon” magazine is distributed to more than 30,000 alumni and friends around the nation.

With its splendid cover story and magnificent pictures shot by award-winning photographer and 2007 MC alumnus Robby Followell of Clinton’s Followell|Fotography, the magazine’s Summer 2012 issue spotlighted an orphan care center in Botswana, Africa.

MC 2011 graduates Allison Hunter and Kasey Ambrose launched the center that offers African children hope in the love of Christ in a country marked by death and despair.

Other stories showcased a Mississippi College Law School Adoption Legal Clinic. Another tells the story of the campaign of 2012 Miss MC Taylor Townsend of Flowood to fight human trafficking.

Three 2013 PIAS graphic awards went to the MC alumni magazine, Hederman Brothers, which began operations in Jackson, Mississippi in 1898 and to Kirkpatrick & Porch Creative. Marlo Kirkpatrick is the magazine’s feature writer and Alecia Porch is the magazine’s designer. The “Beacon” magazine published in the Summer of 2012 received the “Best of Category” and the “Award of Excellence” awards. The Winter 2012 issue was also recognized with an “Award of Excellence.”

Hederman Brothers traces its beginnings to a small company owned by brothers Robert and Tom Hederman who worked in a second story office over a Chinese laundry and barbershop in Mississippi’s capital city.

The new awards for the “Beacon” are the latest in a series of honors for the magazine in recent years.

“We feel blessed to have an extraordinary staff at Mississippi College that works hard on the Beacon year-round in partnership with an excellent team at Hederman Brothers, Kirkpatrick & Porch Creative, and Followell|Fotography,” said magazine editor Tracey Harrison.

“The awards speak to their dedication to put out a first-rate magazine for thousands of our alumni. We appreciate these latest awards from the Printing Association of the South,” said Harrison, MC’s director of public relations.

The Printing Association of the South honored MC’s “Beacon,” Hederman Brothers and the Kirkpatrick & Porch Creative with two Awards of Excellence for the magazine published in the Summer of 2010 and the Fall of 2010.

Over the years, the MC alumni magazine has received awards from the Public Relations Association of Mississippi, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, the Jackson Advertising Federation, and the Baptist Communicators of America.
