Art Ornament Sale Provides Wonderful Christmas Gifts

National Art Education Association

Lauren Fiegle enjoys designing Mississippi College arrowheads and crosses that make for terrific Christmas gifts.

Arrowheads are “the most time consuming (thing) to create, but it is something that is just loved by many and specific to our university,” says the 21-year-old MC art education major.

Lauren joins classmates showing off their creative works at the university’s 6th annual Christmas ornament sale. The December 5-9 event in the campus cafeteria is open to the public.

The president of the student chapter of the National Art Education Association, Fiegle is also busy designing crosses this fall. The crosses represent Mississippi College so well, said the Merritt Island, Florida resident, since the Christian university is founded upon Biblical principles.

Last year’s ornament sale raised $667 to help send Mississippi College students to a national art education conference in New Orleans. This year’s event will go to pay for travel expenses for MC students to attend 2016 National Art Association meetings in Chicago.

“I am very interested in getting my hands dirty in any way I can to raise money for the Art Department,” says MC student Racheal Stodghill, 21. The future art educator from Clinton hopes to become an activist seeking to keep art in the nation’s schools.

Going to the meeting in Chicago will be a good way for MC students to build relationships with art teachers across the nation, says graduate student Elise Payne.

Art education professor Stephanie Busbea says the 2015 MC sale will feature 250 ornaments or nearly double last year’s total. Other items on sale: will be 100 MC arrowheads, 50 crosses and a total of 50 owls and doves. Ornaments sell for $5. Some other pieces of art work will go for $10.

Hours for the early December sale are 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday.
