Choctaw Fest 2009 Features Four Bands November 13

Mississippi College's Choctaw Fest 2009 is attracting four bands to the Clinton campus November 13 for a lively outdoors concert that blends high-energy music with tons of food.

The Friday fun kicks off with food served at 5:30 p.m. in the bowl in front of Jazzman's cafe. The music cranks up around 6:30 p.m. and keeps coming until just before midnight. The bands playing will be Deas Veil, Red Hill City, Paper Route and Nathan Angelo.

MC students are encouraged to show up in big numbers at the event presented by the university's Campus Activities Board. The new event just outside the B.C. Rogers Student Center is much like Mississippi State University's Bulldog Bash, organizers say.

Friday's activities also help usher in MC's Preview Day on Saturday Nov. 14. That's when hundreds of prospective students and parents converge on the Clinton campus for morning sessions to learn about the university's academic offerings and scholarships plus attend classes.

Preview Day for visitors wraps up with a Choctaws football game against Texas Lutheran at 1 p.m. at Robinson-Hale Stadium. It is the final home game of the regular 2009 season for the Choctaws, who have high hopes for the post-season NCAA Division III playoffs.

Choctaw Fest will be the first such event in what is expected to become an MC tradition, says Jonathan Nutt of Clinton, chairman of the Campus Activities Board. Long-sleeve T-shirts will be on sale in honor of the fall event.

MC students will also be part of another event a few days before Choctaw Fest.

Part of a tradition going back decades, MC has booked the annual "I Love America" celebration. The date is Nov. 11 and it coincides with the nation's salute to Veterans Day. There are no speakers booked for this year's "I Love America Day."

But this event supported by MC student leaders is designed to encourage the MC family to remember the many contributions of the men and women who served with America's military. It is also another opportunity to pray for the U.S. soldiers fighting in two wars today in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In what figures to be a busy week, the MC Office of Student Activities is trumpeting the Hoop N' Holla pep rally Tuesday Nov. 10. The MC faculty/staff will take on student leaders in a basketball game starting at 9 p.m. on the Clinton campus. The game and pep rally should help get the Choctaws 2009-2010 basketball season off to a rousing start.
