MC Healthplex Upgrades Basketball Court

When basketball fans lace up their sneakers and head to the Baptist Healthplex, they will soon notice a much better basketball court.

It was nearly a complete makeover just like they do on HGTV. The court just got resurfaced and was sanded all the way down to the bare wood, said Keith Montgomery, the facility's marketing director.

For basketball fans who love to shoot foul shots, get in more competitive 3 on 3 games or just talk about favorite NBA stars like Kobie Bryant, they will also notice a new Mississippi College logo on the court.

It was the first major renovation of the basketball court since the Baptist Healthplex opened a dozen years ago, Montgomery said.

And that's not all in terms of Baptist Healthplex upgrades. "We re-did the racquetball room and aerobic rooms," he said.

The Baptist Healthplex will be flexing their muscles on the evening of August 25 - this Tuesday. That's when there will be late night activities catering to MC students from 10 pm until midnight. They are dubbing it "Late night at the Plex." It's one way to welcome back students and let them have a little fun before classes begin Aug 26.

Montgomery is going to work up a sweat with a sales pitch the next few days. He's playing up a September 1 enrollment special for faculty and staff. He's got much to brag about - after all, the Baptist Healthplex is simply one of the South's premier fitness facilities right here on the MC campus.

One of the major events at the Healthplex this fall will be the October 31 Dixie Division Table Tennis Tournament with MC's nationally ranked Choctaws team taking on rivals like the University of Alabama, Southern Miss, Mississippi State and the University of Alabama-Huntsville. With new players arriving from China and Nepal, MC's team hopes to return to the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association's championship. The NCTTA Nationals will be staged in Wisconsin in April 2010.

The Healthplex is also home to spinning classes taught by MC Retention and Career Services Director Karen Lindsey-Lloyd, and new Zumba classes plus others to help the MC community burn calories and stay fit.
