MC Hosts Family Weekend Oct. 16-17


Scoops of Ben and Jerry's ice cream, a Choctaws football game, plus a student talent show are part of the fun-filled line up during Mississippi College's annual Family Weekend Oct. 16-17.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for children (ages 6-12) for the slew of events on the Clinton campus. MC parents, alumni, and friends are expected here from around the Magnolia State and across state lines. Children who are 5 years old and younger will be admitted free.

The weekend kicks off Friday evening at 8 p.m. with the annual student talent show dubbed "MC's Got Talent." A social will follow at Jazzman's Cafe. Saturday's events include tribal breakfasts, a session for parents titled "Parents as Partners" led by MC's new college counselor, Dr. Amy Christian, a former staffer at Mississippi State University.

Much of the weekend action centers around the Saturday, Oct. 17 football game.The Choctaws face Texas rival Mary Hardin-Baylor at 1 p.m in a key American Southwest Conference contest at Robinson-Hale Stadium.

Other Saturday events include Clinton's Olde Towne Market, an MC book bazaar to benefit the Leland Speed Library (at Alumni Gym), and a barbecue lunch with the Pates supplying the entertainment. More than 10,000 books, audio tapes and other items will be on sale. Last year's book fair raised about $6,700 for the MC library.

"Lots of neat things are going on," says Joseph Odenwald, the coordinator of student development at MC. "Obviously we are very excited. We're hoping for a great turnout and some great fall weather."

Also on the schedule: the MC Music Department presents "The Sound of Music" at 7 p.m. Oct. 15-17 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18 at the Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall at Aven Hall. For tickets to the show, contact the MC Music Department at 601.925.3440 or go to music@mc.edu.
