Too Many Sopranos Makes MC Performances Feb. 27-28

"Too Many Sopranos" is the name of a comical opera that takes place in Heaven.

The opera was first performed by the Indiana University School of Music Workshop on April 15, 1997. The story begins when the sopranos arrive at the pearly gates only to be told by St. Peter there are "Too Many Sopranos." The women must recruit more tenors and basses for the heavenly choir in order to gain entrance into heaven, thus bringing balance to the female-laden choir. The women take off to "the other place" in order to find the right voices.

Audiences that love contemporary American opera, music theater, or a good laugh, will want to see the Mississippi College debut of this production on the Clinton campus in late February.

Many students, from freshmen to graduate level, are involved in this production. Kristen Johnson, music department faculty member, is director of the production, while Carol Joy Sparkman, also a faculty member, serves as musical director.

Among the students in the production, senior Caleb Cook plays the role of Orson and senior Jay Carr stars as St. Peter. Junior Shemela Goodloe and sophomore Katie Boles are cast as Dame Doleful. Just Jeanette is played by junior Katherine Graddy and senior Mary Margaret May.

Performances will be held Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 28 at 2:30 p.m. in the Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall in the Aven Fine Arts building. General admission is $5. For more information regarding this event, call 601.925.3440.
