Debate Team at Mississippi College Launches New Season

Dr. Merle Ziegler

Languages like French and German are spoken in Luxembourg, the tiny landlocked nation of 543,000 people in Western Europe.

It’s also the home of Mississippi College sophomore Christopher Fisher, who seeks to improve his communication skills as a member of the university’s debate team this fall.

A biology major, Christopher competed on the MC debate team last spring, and the international student returns to the squad as the 2014-15 season begins in October.

The squad will feature a combination of veteran debaters like Christopher and several newcomers. Coached by communication professor Merle Ziegler, the MC debate team is busy preparing for its first tournament this fall at the University of Arkansas-Monticello. The event is set for October 3-5.

Other returning debaters include senior Alex Hendry, a Christian Studies major from Ellisville, and the Student Government Association’s first Christian Development chair. Andrew Rock, an interpersonal and public communication major and MC sophomore, is also back for another season.

Ziegler is pleased to announce that three students recently joined the Mississippi College squad.

They include: senior Maggie Selmon-Wilson, an English literature major from Clinton, junior Cierra Bailey, a political science major from Birmingham, Alabama, and junior Eric Anderson, an interpersonal and public communication major from Austin, Texas.

Ziegler isn’t closing the door to others interested in verbal sparring and joining the team.

He says he’s looking for students seeking to “develop their abilities to think on their feet, present their ideas persuasively and enjoy close camaraderie with fellow students.”

Other debate tournaments on the road will bring the Mississippi College team to Louisiana State University at Shreveport for the Red River Classic November 7-9. The squad is booked for the Tiger Invitational at East Texas Baptist University November 14-15.

Mississippi College will host the Deep South Debates for several regional collegiate teams on the Clinton campus December 5-6.
