Fellowship of Christian Athletes Welcomes Heisman Winner

Look for a big turnout of members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes when former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel visits Mississippi College on Thursday.
“This will be a great benefit to everyone who comes,” said Justin Pigott, who leads MC’s FCA chapter with his wife, Bethany. “He’s got a great story and loves the Lord. It shows in what he does.”
A Pensacola native who played six seasons with the New Orleans Saints, the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins, Wuerffel will speak at 5 p.m. at Swor Auditorium on the Clinton campus.
Tickets are $5 for the event that’s open to FCA students from MC and Clinton High and to the community. Tickets can be purchased at the door in Nelson Hall.
After retiring from pro football, Wuerffel worked at Desire Street Ministries, a nonprofit, faith-based group focusing on spiritual and community development in one of the poorest areas of New Orleans.
There are over 130 student-athletes and a number of students who don’t participate in collegiate sports involved with MC’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Pigott said. “A lot of students will be coming out. There seems to be a lot of buzz around the campus.”
Wuerffel played quarterback under coach Steve Spurrier with the Florida Gators from 1993 to 1996. The Florida native won the 1996 Heisman Trophy after the Gators won the national championship. He led the Gators to four consecutive Southeastern Conference titles. As a high schooler, he gained national attention when he led the Fort Walton Beach Vikings to a state championship and No. 2 ranking in “USA Today.”
The event at MC “is open to students and parents and anyone in the community who would like to come,” said Jim Harrison, FCA huddle leader at Clinton High.
Wuerffel is also in town to speak at a Clinton Chamber of Commerce banquet.
