Katy Thompson Honored as Young Alumna of the Year at Mississippi College

Katy Thompson recruits student leaders around the nation desiring to be change agents for Jesus Christ.
No doubt, the Mississippi College communication graduate is doing amazing work with Impact 360 Gap Year, a Christian ministry based in Pine Mountain, Georgia.
MC leaders have noticed her many accomplishments on the job and selected Thompson as the university’s 2014 Alumna of the Year. Katy says she’s humbled and excited to be among the distinguished graduates being honored at the institution’s Homecoming Dinner on October 17.
Katy is thrilled to return to her alma mater in Clinton this fall and reconnect with people who made such a big imprint on her life.
“What I absolutely love about Mississippi College is the people,” Thompson says. “I grew up in Clinton, so all my life MC alumni have influenced and invested in me, whether it be teachers, church leaders or friends of the family.”
As enrollment manager with Impact 360 Gap Year, Katy networks with various churches and ministries across the USA. She’s constantly searching for students in the age range of 18 to 20 who seek to spend a year studying important topics in their faith. At the same time, the students serve their community, receive leadership training and travel to month-long mission trips in Brazil.
Often, her career path leads back to Mississippi College. “There are so many Mississippi College alums doing powerful Kingdom work around the nation and the world.” She’s observed that more than 20 of the Impact 360 alumni have become Mississippi College students during her service with the ministry.
Working from her home in Birmingham, Alabama, Katy goes on the road speaking to youth groups, camps, youth pastors gatherings and at chapel programs about IMPACT 360.
A member of the Mississippi College Hall of Fame and the Mortar Board Honor Society, Katy is definitely making a powerful impact as an MC graduate.
“Katy has shown not only promise, but the use of skills which she acquired as a student and perfected in her professional life as well,” says Cliff Fortenberry, chairman of the MC Department of Communication. “She makes others around her better and gives a hand up to those who need it.”
Thompson attended Mississippi College from 1998 through 2005. She earned her bachelor’s degree in communication with a sterling 3.66 grade point average. Katy received a master’s in public relations and corporate communication with a nearly perfect 3.9 average.
A bright student on the Clinton campus, “Katy studied and helped those around her learn the material,” Fortenberry said. “She was willing to sacrifice to make herself better. Those traits have made her what she is today and we are so very proud of her.”
In her profession, and when she’s off the clock, Katy is a goodwill ambassador for America’s second oldest Baptist college. “The friends I made at MC are my best friends for life,” she said. “Our time at MC deeply influenced who we are today. I’m so grateful for Mississippi College.”
The 2014 Homecoming Dinner begins 6 p.m. that Friday evening in Anderson Hall. Tickets are $20. For more information, contact Lori Bobo of the Alumni Affairs Office at 601-925-3252 or lbobo@mc.edu.
