MC Art Department Chairman Randy Miley Receives Award

The Mississippi Art Education Association recently gave one of its top honors to Randy Miley, the chairman of the Mississippi College Art Department.
An MC professor since 1999, Miley was named the organization’s higher education art educator of the year for 2010-2011.
Miley has served as a member of the statewide association since 1975 and worked ever since to promote art education throughout the South.
“I guess art education is in my blood,” Miley said. The MC professor noted he works with a very passionate and dedicated group of educators at Mississippi College. “They make my job so easy.”
Colleagues say they the new award for the MC art chairman is well-deserved.
“He’s very good at art education. Dr. Miley knows his stuff,” said Michael Hataway, MC’s graphic arts coordinator. Every summer, Miley leads seminars for teachers at high schools in Mississippi and around the South, he added.
The Mississippi Art Education Association is affiliated with the National Art Education Association. The Mississippi group seeks to keep teachers on the cutting edge of art education. The association consists of educators who are dedicated to their craft and working to benefit students.
A Clinton resident, Miley received his associate of arts degree from Hinds Community College in 1975, and a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1977. He earned a master’s in education at Mississippi College in 1982 and a doctorate at Florida State University. His wife, Vicky, is an award-winning art teacher at Pearl High School.
Miley received a similar award when he served as an art professor at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
