MC Debate Team Wins Six Trophies
Mississippi College's debate team grabbed six top awards at a national tournament in Arkansas to close out the 2010 season.
Debaters Randall Miller, Thujee Lhendup and Josh McCormick each received two trophies at the International Public Debate Association's event at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.
A total of 160 debaters from 19 schools participated at the March 25-28th tournament. Among the awards: McCormick was named 8th-place varsity debater and Miller earned 9th place speaker honors. Lhendup, MC's sole novice competitor, received the 5th place speaker award.
MC debaters have been successful in other campus competition. A resident of Roseland, La., Miller was recently elected MC's Student Government Association president. Lhendup, a native of Bhutan in South Asia, was elected MC's Supreme Court justice earlier this month.
Debate team coach Merle Ziegler says he anticipates a pretty good season ahead starting next fall. Miller, Lhendup and Harris Swayze of Benton return as varsity debaters. Amanda Fortenberry of Union, Chase Caldwell of Vidalia, La., Jasmine Hammond of Greenwood and Jenna Correl of Meridian will return to the MC team as novices.
