Miss Mississippi College Pageant 2016 Set for January 28

Kendyll Covington did a superb job representing Mississippi College as the winner of the 2015 Miss MC Pageant.

In a few weeks, the talented music theatre major will be on stage at Swor Auditorium to see her successor crowned on the Clinton campus.

Covington will team with John “JB” Long as emcees of the 2016 Miss MC Pageant. Booked for January 28, the Thursday evening program begins at 7 p.m.

As a 19-year-old sophomore from Pelham, Alabama, Kendyll was thrilled to wear the crown for the first time in late January 2015. “Winning the pageant means the world to me,” she said soon after her triumph. “The experience has provided growth in so many ways.”

During the past year, Kendyll stayed busy promoting her platform that spreads awareness about sexual assault on the nation’s college campuses.

At the moment, ten women are seeking the title of the 2016 Miss MC. The names of the students will be released in early January.

With a theme of the Golden Age, the upcoming pageant on the Clinton campus will be extra special. The event marks the 50th anniversary of the first Miss MC Pageant back in the 1960s.

The first Miss MC Pageant winner was Patricia Channel. Trish later competed in the Miss Mississippi and Miss America pageants. The Mississippi College representative impressed judges as a first runner-up at the national contest in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The 2016 Miss MC pageant, like last year, is not a preliminary to the Miss Mississippi Pageant in Vicksburg over the summer. The Miss Mississippi Pageant dates back to 1934.

But there is much at stake at Mississippi College. The Miss MC Pageant winner will receive a $2,000 university scholarship and a nice package of prizes from area businesses.

At the January 28 program, the 2016 title holder will get the opportunity to meet some of the women selected as pageant winners during past decades at the Christian university.

Tickets going on sale in January are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.

Hundreds of students and other members of the MC family were part of the big audience at last year’s pageant. And this year’s event should be no different.

“The pageant is always fun for participants as well as the audience,” says Jonathan Nutt, director of student development. “Students always seem to look forward to the event every January,” adds the MC graduate who’s helped organize the show in recent years.
