Mississippi College Hosts Career Day 2012

Mississippi College students and alumni will meet with scores of employers and network with others at MC’s 2012 Career Day.

The event on February 7 should attract representatives from 79 organizations, including banks, school districts, accounting firms, hospitals, government agencies and graduate schools.

MC’s Office of Career Services sponsors the annual program with help coming from a number of business partners.

Staffers like assistant director Hayley Taff urge students to make the best use of their time before Career Day hits.

“Students should review the list of employers before Career Day and target their top five to ten employers,” she said. They should bring at least ten copies of their resume to the Tuesday event that runs from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. at Anderson Hall.

It’s really more than just a one-day program.

The MC Office of Career Services sponsored a networking workshop on January 31 in the BC Rogers Board Room to help students prepare for Career Day. “We will also discuss how to research companies before Career Day, and how to follow up with employers after Career Day,” Taff said. MC Career Service staffers will provide rapid resume reviews to assist students at the university’s cafeteria from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday February 1.

Last year’s Career Day drew hundreds of students to Anderson Hall.

“We welcome new graduates,” said Anita Oliphant, employment manager at River Region Health System in Vicksburg. “I’ve been coming here for four or five years and it gets better every year. It’s a nice atmosphere.”

Among those booked for visits on February 7 will be the Clinton Public Schools, Teach for America, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mississippi Public Broadcasting, Community Bank, the Mississippi State Hospital and Pepsi’s Brown Bottling Group.

Career Day is designed to serve currently enrolled MC students and alumni.

Taff says event organizers are thankful to the Career Services Employer Partners: Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance, Fast Enterprises and Comcast. All three were partners last year. In addition, MC officials thank the School of Business Corporate Partners: Bancorp South, HORNE LLP, Trustmark Bank, Community Bank, Eubank, Betts, Him & Wood, PLLC and Haddox, Reid Burkes & Calhoun.
