Mississippi College Music Department Features Four November Concerts

Music lovers are invited to sample a diverse lineup of November performances at Mississippi College.

It all begins with a recital by Furman University organ professor Charles Thompkins on November 10 at Provine Chapel. The 7 p.m. concert is free and open to the public. The Tuesday evening program on the Clinton campus is sponsored by the American Guild of Organists.

A few days later, the sounds of American jazz will fill the air at Aven Hall. The MC Jazz Band will perform under the direction of Wayne Linehan, adjunct trumpet professor and trumpet player for the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.The November 16 program at the Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall is free and the public is welcome. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. that Monday evening.

Fans of the James Sclater Chamber Music Series shouldn’t miss the second concert of the fall season. The Accento Trio will perform November 20 at the Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall.

Based at the University of Southern Mississippi, the ensemble features flutist Danilo Mezzadri, soprano Susan Ruggiero and pianist Elizabeth Moak.

The group performs across the United States and abroad, visiting venues stretching from the Natchez Opera Festival to stages in Italy. The Hattiesburg-based trio offers an extensive variety of selections ranging from Baroque to popular show tunes of Broadway. The group will play music by Ravel, Debussy and Schubert, among others.

Tickets are available online at mc.edu/marketplace or at the door. Individual tickets cost $20. The price is $5 for students with an ID card. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. The series is a tribute to Sclater, an award-winning Clinton composer who taught music at Mississippi College for four decades before retiring in 2010.

The November music marathon includes a performance by the Mississippi College Symphonic Winds Orchestra conducted by Craig Young. The November 23 program at Swor Auditorium is free and the public is invited. The program begins at 7:30 p.m.
