Future Choctaws gain insight into life at MC during Fall Preview Days

Prospective students can get an authentic look at what the everyday experience of being part of MC's campus community is like during Preview Days' Student Panel.

Prospective college students can experience campus life at Mississippi Christian University (MC) during MC’s Fall Preview Days, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, and Monday, Oct. 12, on the Clinton campus.

Visitors will tour MC’s Clinton campus, sit in on a class and meet current students and future Choctaws, among other activities.

Haleigh Roberts, guest experience coordinator in MC’s Office of Admissions, said the immersive experience gives students greater insight into MC’s rich, Christian culture during the University’s bicentennial year.

“Both events are designed for prospective students and their families to experience MC beyond simply seeing the campus,” Roberts said. “Our goal is for students to have the opportunity to picture themselves as Choctaws – to explore their academic interests, meet current students and faculty, experience the classroom, see residence life and get a feel for the community they could call home.”

She said MC’s Preview Days are designed to answer prospective students’ questions.

“Every student is coming to MC with different priorities. Some want to know what their major will look like, some want to see where they will live, some want to meet current students and others want to understand what makes MC different from other colleges they are considering. Preview Day allows them to explore all of those things in one visit.”

The Sept. 12 session will provide an opportunity for students to experience the energy of the MC campus. In addition to the Preview Day programming, students and their families can explore the Walter Anderson Adventures and the Gore Galleries, tour residence halls, visit MC’s state-of-the-art cadaver lab, and interact with MC Athletics. Attendees can participate in a soccer game and tailgate at Longabaugh Field or attend a volleyball game at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The Oct. 12 session will highlight a typical school day at MC. In addition to residence hall tours, and visits to the Gore Galleries, the Arts Complex and the cadaver lab, students and families can customize their afternoon experience by selecting activities tailored to their individual interests.

Roberts said family members should come prepared with questions.

“This is their opportunity to talk with MC faculty, current students, the admissions team and other members of the MC community,” she said. “We want them to ask the questions that matter most to them and to take advantage of the opportunities throughout the day.”

Activities planned for Fall Preview Days include:

* Welcome and check-in on Pedestrian Street: students and families can pick up their nametags and a welcome bag, enjoy a snack and prepare for a busy day.

* Academic Marketplace: mingle with professors and learn about majors offered at MC. “The Academic Marketplace is valuable for students because they can ask questions of faculty members from across campus and begin exploring the academic programs that may be the right fit for them.” Roberts said.

* Student Panel: hear from current students about their MC experiences. “The Student Panel gives prospective students an authentic look at what life is really like at MC, from favorite traditions and ways to get involved to the everyday experience of being part of our campus community,” Roberts said.

* Student Experience Panel and Admissions Chat: learn about academic opportunities, the next steps in the admissions process and how prospective students can become involved in campus organizations.

* Mock Classes: meet MC professors and see what a college class is like. “Rather than simply hearing about a major, students can step into a classroom and experience an engaging class within the department of their intended major,” Roberts said.

* Campus Tour: check out the facilities and see why MC’s campus is considered one of the most beautiful in the state.

* Choose Your Own Adventure: attendees can select the experiences that are most meaningful to them, whether touring a residence hall, exploring an academic space, meeting with MC’s admissions team, or becoming more familiar with the campus.

“Preview Day is about helping students make an informed decision about where they want to spend the next four years,” Roberts said. “We want them to leave with more than just information about MC; we want them to begin to see themselves here. Whether that happens during a conversation with a current student, a mock class, a campus tour or simply walking across campus with their family, those moments are what make Preview Day meaningful.”
