MC alum Ed Young to present inaugural ‘Doc’ Quick Distinguished Lectureship

Dr. Ed Young, former longtime senior pastor of Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and host of “The Winning Walk,” will present the inaugural Van Dyke “Doc” Quick Distinguished Lectureship on Sept. 24.

Mississippi Christian University (MC) will host the inaugural Van Dyke “Doc” Quick Distinguished Lectureship, featuring Dr. Ed Young ’58, ‘87, one of the nation’s most accomplished evangelical leaders, at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, in Provine Chapel on the Clinton campus.

A longtime senior pastor of Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, Young now hosts “The Winning Walk,” an international radio, television and internet ministry. Young’s lecture is free and open to the public. A brief reception will follow on the third floor of Alumni Hall.

As the flagship program of the Institute for Christian Leadership at MC, the lectureship represents a meaningful opportunity to celebrate legacy, inspire leadership and deepen faith-centered dialogue at Mississippi Christian University.

MC President Blake Thompson said students, faculty, staff and visitors will have an opportunity to hear from one of today’s foremost Christian voices.

“In addition to being a longtime friend of ‘Doc’ Quick, Dr. Young has demonstrated the lasting impact of dedicated Christian leadership throughout his career. We look forward to Dr. Young sharing his insights with us, and perhaps a few stories from his time at MC,” Thompson said.

A native of Laurel, Young answered the call to ministry while a student at the University of Alabama and transferred to MC to continue his education. He later prepared for ministry at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and served churches in North and South Carolina before being called in 1978 to Second Baptist Church in Houston.

During Young’s 46-year tenure, Second Baptist experienced remarkable growth and became one of the nation’s largest Baptist congregations. Young was elected to two terms as president of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1992 and 1993 and has authored several books. “The Winning Walk,” grew from Second Baptist’s broadcast ministry and shares his Biblical teaching internationally through television, radio and digital media.

The “Doc” Quick Lectureship honors the enduring legacy of one of MC’s most beloved and revered administrators who was a friend to many on and off the Clinton campus. Quick devoted more than three decades to MC as a leader in student and alumni affairs and remained an icon in the University’s family for more than half a century.

“We could not think of anyone more deserving to name this lectureship after than ‘Doc’ Quick,” said Jim Miller, director of development and major gifts for the MC Foundation. “Over the years, he helped shape the spiritual and vocational journeys of countless MC students.”

The ‘Doc’ Quick Lectureship Series honors Quick’s enduring impact, strengthens the integration of faith and learning through engagement with influential Christian voices, and inspires current students, faculty, staff and alumni through compelling stories of leadership, service and vocational calling. It reinforces MC’s identity as a Christ-centered institution committed to preparing servant leaders.
