MC Flowood Center Collects School Supplies for Rankin County Children

Book bags, crayons, paper towels, glue and pencils are among the items that will stack up soon at Mississippi College’s Flowood Center.

Staffers at the Flowood Center are collecting school supplies for Rankin County children through late September.

The project is part of an ongoing partnership between the MC branch off Lakeland Drive and the Rankin County Children’s Mentoring Program.

“It’s a natural fit for MC Flowood,” says center director Sara Kimmel. The Rankin mentoring program, she said, “does a terrific job connecting Rankin area students who need a mentoring relationship with volunteers interested in helping them navigate through life situations” during their K-12 experience.

“The program is geared toward helping students be successful and build a great foundation to carry them into their college years,” Kimmel said.

The Rankin County Children’s Mentoring Program works with children and youth who are at-risk and in need of emotional support from caring adults.

During the year, the MC Flowood Center also collects Valentine’s Day cards and Easter baskets for the children in the area.

The MC Flowood Center opened last August. The facility at 115 Laurel Park Cove is primarily geared to working adults with undergraduate classes two evenings a week in such fields as accounting, public relations, marketing, social work and business administration.

The school supplies can be dropped off Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the center next-door to the Flowood Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center.

For some schools in metro Jackson, the new academic year begins as early as Friday August 5th.
