MC’s Morehead elected vice-chair/chair-elect of the Mississippi Society of CPAs
Billy Morehead, professor of accounting in the School of Business at Mississippi Christian University, has been elected vice-chair/chair-elect of the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Morehead, who serves as director of MC’s Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program and the Center for Faith, Service and Ethics, was elected to the position during the MSCPA’s annual business meeting. The appointment became effective July 1, 2026, and he will assume the role of chair on July 1, 2027.
In his new role, Morehead will support the current chair, Kimberly Williams.
“One of my primary responsibilities will be to select the chairs of the various committees of the MSCPA who will serve with me during the 2027-28 year,” he said. “As chair, I will continue to lead our organization to remain focused on continuous improvement of services to the profession, the public and our accounting students across the state who are the future of accounting and public service.”
Morehead is not the only MC faculty member serving in MSCPA leadership. V. Brooks Poole, associate professor of accounting in MC’s School of Business, is serving in his second year on the MSCPA’s Governing Board.
Morehead said it is important for MC faculty to serve in leadership roles within their respective professional organizations.
“Faculty are uniquely positioned to connect the ‘profession’ with the ‘next generation’ of those entering the profession after their academic preparation,” he said. “Faculty have a window into what's coming for the workforce and how to strengthen the profession and academics.”
Morehead said his leadership role with the MSCPAs will provide opportunities for MC students to gain greater insight into the accounting profession in Mississippi, including changes shaping the field.
“This is an exciting time to be an accounting major and an accountant,” Morehead said. “AI is being adopted across the profession to assist CPAs in financial statements and other complex analyses, audit sampling, reviews of legal documents and contracts, preparation of tax returns, and many other facets. But AI cannot replace the human interaction, which is best left to the professionals and their clients.”
Founded in 1920, the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants is the largest professional organization serving CPAs and aspiring CPAs. With more than 2,700 members, the organization represents the majority of Mississippi CPAs in public practice, business and industry, government, and education, and advocates for the profession at the state and national levels.
