Mississippi College and Jackson Prep Forge New Agreement for English Classes

Jonathan Randle, dean of the MC School of Humanities & Social Sciences, signed a June 24 agreement with Jackson Prep educators. The group included school leader Jason Walton.

Mississippi College leaders strengthened their partnership with Jackson Prep.

Under the dual enrollment agreement signed on June 24, Jackson Prep students taking English classes on Prep’s Flowood campus will earn academic credit at MC.

Starting in August, English 101: Freshman Composition will be taught by Jackson Prep teacher Nathan Devine, a 2002 MC graduate. In addition, a Mississippi College instructor will visit the private school along Lakeland Drive at least twice per semester to meet with Jackson Prep students.

The total cost per course is $200.

Mississippi College administrators and Jackson Prep officials approved a similar arrangement in July 2015 for math classes. Under that program, Jackson Prep students could sign up for classes in subjects like Algebra, elementary statistics, and calculus to earn MC credits.

It’s fitting that MC steps up its partnership with Jackson Prep, says Jonathan Randle, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the 5,200-student Baptist-affiliated university.

“Students at Jackson Prep will receive a strong background in college-level writing which will be advantageous to them as they pursue their university careers,” Randle says. “We’re hopeful that, in the process, some students will be attracted by the value and benefit of the strong Christ-centered education that Mississippi College offers.”

Both metro Jackson institutions, he said, “strive to produce alumni who are committed to academic excellence and lifelong learning.”

Jackson Prep seniors will get the opportunity to take English 101 for MC credit when Prep begins its 2016-2017 academic year on August 12.

Founded in 1970, Jackson Prep has maintained a nice relationship with the Christian university in Clinton for decades.

“Through the years, we have enjoyed our strong partnership,” says Jim Turcotte, MC vice president for enrollment services and dean of students.

Jackson Prep students who enrolled at Mississippi College, he said, proved to be very successful.

“We are very happy with this partnership and the MC exposure it will provide to potential students at Prep,” added MC admissions director Kyle Brantley.

President Lee Royce and Jason Walton, who heads Jackson Prep, signed the initial agreement in 2015. Walton and Randle inked the documents in late June on the Clinton campus.
