Ellie Slay never gets tired of seeing high school students fall in love with Mississippi College.

During her three years serving as an MC Scout – a student recruiter who guides prospective students and their families on tours of MC’s picturesque Clinton campus, among other duties – Slay made sure each visitor witnessed everything the Christian University has to offer.

Now president of Scouts, the senior biology medical science major from Brookhaven is looking to make MC’s upcoming fall Preview Days, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27, and Monday, Oct. 13, as welcoming as possible.

“It is an honor to be a small part of a student’s college decision,” Slay said. “We do not take it for granted. Our Scouts do a great job of showing MC through their personal experiences, and it makes the day meaningful and relatable to the visiting students.

“I hope each student gets a glimpse of how wonderful MC truly is and can picture themselves here alongside us.”

Michael Wright, dean of enrollment management in MC’s Office of Admissions, said Preview Day participants have the opportunity to meet MC faculty, staff, administrators and students, tour the campus, sit in on a mock class in their major field of interest, tailgate on the Quad, and enjoy a meal from the University’s cafeteria.

“The best way to assess whether a university is the right fit is to step foot on the campus and experience what it’s like to be a student,” Wright said. “Preview Day gives prospective students that opportunity.

“Our mission in the MC Admissions Office is to wisely guide prospective students through their college decision process. Students shouldn’t choose a college based solely on websites, viewbooks and online testimonials. They should experience it for themselves. That’s why we offer Preview Days.”

Mac Roberts, a junior biology major from Brookhaven who is helping with Preview Day planning, said he values his interactions with prospective students of the state’s oldest institution of higher learning.

“The exchange of insight Preview Day offers helps to strengthen the University community and enriches the overall campus experience,” Roberts said. “Preview Day is an exciting and dynamic event, packed with engaging activities that showcase the spirit of Mississippi College.

“It’s not just fun; it’s a meaningful opportunity for prospective students to connect, learn and envision their future at the college.”

Slay’s favorite part of every Preview Day is watching students and parents arrive on the MC campus for the very first time.

“Scouts line campus, cheering them on and welcoming them to MC,” she said. “It never gets old seeing their excitement for the day ahead – and it only gets more fun from there.

“Preview Day attracts an amazing group of incoming students each year who have seen exactly what MC has to offer and how they will fit into place here.”
