Vicki Armstrong Show at Mississippi College Features Watercolors

"Places I Remember" by Vicki Armstrong will be on display from Jan. 8- Feb. 20 at the Gore Art Galleries.

Jackson artist Vicki Armstrong portrays bustling streets in New York, boats quietly resting in the harbor and a popular ice cream stand in her splendid watercolors.

Art lovers are invited to see “Places I Remember,” the Mississippi College graduate’s one-person show spotlighting 51 watercolors at the Gore Art Galleries on the Clinton campus. Booked from January 8 through February 20, the show is free.

Mississippians can meet the talented artist at a two-hour reception at the Gore Galleries on January 15. The event begins at 6 p.m. that Thursday evening.

Born in Louisiana, Armstrong spent most of her life in Jackson. At Mississippi College, Vicki studied under famed sculptor and painter Sam Gore, the university’s former Art Department chairman.

It was during her years as a Mississippi College art student that she developed a fascination for the watercolor medium. “I enjoy the challenge that watercolor brings to the table.”

After graduation, Armstrong spent time developing her career and craft in the graphic art industry. “I see my experience in graphic art as groundwork for the realism that exists in my painting today,” she said. “My work tends to focus on reality.”

The award-winning artist is a member of the Mississippi Watercolor Society and the Southern Watercolor Society. Her works are on display at Brown’s Gallery in Jackson.

Gore Galleries Director Randy Jolly says Vicki has “great mastery of the watercolor medium and uses it to express her feelings and love for friends and travels. She explores light and form in a very personal way.”

With her diverse mix of watercolor scenes depicting people and places, Armstrong “captures the essence of the moment,” he said.

Located behind MC’s Leland Speed Library, the Gore Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. and Tuesday evenings from 6-8 p.m.
