Daniel White Promotes Mississippi College Writing Center

Daniel White

Daniel White deserves a nice share of the credit for making Mississippi College’s Writing Center one of the best in the business.

An MC English professor, White remains passionate about enriching the learning center in the Leland Speed Library. On a daily basis, the facility serves as a popular spot for students seeking to improve their academic skills on the Clinton campus.

Serving as president of the Mississippi Writing Center Association, White will be among the keynote speakers at an October 19-20 conference at the University of Mississippi. He will offer guidance to language arts professionals from high schools and colleges statewide. His lecture will draw from his MC Writing Center experiences.

The Transitioning to College Writing conference in Oxford is designed to help high school graduates adjust to more stringent demands on campuses over the next four years.

In 2011, MC English professors Steve Price and Kerri Jordan relaunched the Mississippi Writing Center Association that White now heads. The two professors were major players as the MC Writing Center got off the ground. Price remains director of the Mississippi College program today.

MC educators are thankful to White for his faithful support.

A frequent Writing Center visitor, White enjoys offering tips to student tutors about their help sessions at the library along College Street. “He encourages tutors and writers with his positive spirit and thoughtful comments,” says Lingshan Song, the center’s assistant director.

Known as the “King of Twitter,” White uses his abundant wit to promote the Writing Center with his social media posts. “We love our Friend of the Writing Center,” Song said.

Writing Center tutor Kayla Beebe of Midland, Michigan commends the talented English professor.

“Mr. White is so incredibly supportive to the Writing Center, the tutors and all of his students,” says Beebe, 21, an English Writing major. “We are so lucky to have him as a professor, and fortunate enough to have the chance to gain from his insights.”

The 7th annual program is hosted by the Ole Miss Department of Writing and Rhetoric. Other speakers include Bud Hunt, a teacher-consultant with the Colorado State University Writing Project, and Florida State University English professor Kathy Blake Yancey.

White teaches information literacy and writing classes at Mississippi College. He’s helped with online tutoring and student tutor training at three Mississippi writing centers. The professor is also hitting the books as a graduate student seeking a degree in higher education administration.

“We’re very proud of Daniel for all of his work at Mississippi College,” Steve Price says. “We’re especially proud of his unwavering commitment to students and to the Writing Program.”
