MC’s cybersecurity master’s degree program earns top marks from Programs.com
Programs.com, a leading degree program review site, has listed Mississippi Christian University among the state’s top cybersecurity master’s degree programs for 2026.
MC’s Master of Science in cybersecurity and information assurance is designed for technical professionals who seek a broader understanding of defense strategy, policy, security assessments and the ethical and regulatory environment around cyberspace.
MC is the only private institution in the state offering a dedicated graduate cybersecurity degree, giving students who prefer a smaller institutional setting an alternative to the public universities.
Melissa C. Wiggins, MC professor of computer science and cybersecurity, said the ranking recognizes the curriculum’s unique blend of theory and hands-on application using state-of-the-art software and techniques.
“We want to give our students an experience that is as authentic as possible,” said Wiggins, who serves as director of MC’s cybersecurity programs. “We have cyber range activities and labs and cover all types of cybersecurity. We teach cutting-edge and current trends as well, including an ‘AI in Cybersecurity’ course.
“Unlike many other master’s programs, we require a solid foundation in computer science. This focus ensures higher-order thinking skills and established problem-solving.”
She said the program offers an undergraduate certificate in cybersecurity that can be added to a B.S. in computer science or a B.S. in computing and information systems, and a master’s and a post-graduate certificate in cybersecurity and information assurance.
In developing its rankings, Programs.com noted MC’s five-semester completion option and graduate certificate pathway. The 10-course M.S. is structured to be completed in five semesters, with a clear schedule that allows working professionals to plan their timeline with confidence. Students can complete an 18-credit graduate certificate in cybersecurity and information assurance in approximately 12 months, making it a practical option for professionals who want targeted upskilling without committing to the full M.S.
MC also hosts an annual statewide Cybersecurity Summit that draws practitioners, academics and industry professionals, giving enrolled students direct access to the state’s broader cybersecurity community.
“Our goal is to provide a place where all sectors can come together and gain knowledge about current issues, as well as gain contacts with people that are outstanding in cybersecurity,” Wiggins said.
She said MC alums have distinguished themselves among cyber professionals.
“They protect the U.S. military, state and local governments, businesses and critical infrastructure,” she said.
