MC to honor veterans with ‘Cake and Stars’ event on Nov. 11
Whether earning a Military Friendly designation for extraordinary academic service to the Armed Forces community, nurturing the next generation of leaders by partnering with Jackson State University on Army and Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps programs, or offering a reduced rate to help military members and their families succeed in undergraduate and graduate-level programs, Mississippi College is committed to serving military veterans and their families.
On Veterans Day 2025, MC will demonstrate that commitment by hosting a “Cake and Stars” event to salute those on campus and in the Clinton community who have served our nation.
Throughout the week of Nov. 3-7, MC students, faculty and staff are invited to visit the MC Cafeteria, the Leland Speed Library or the first floor of Nelson Hall and write the names of beloved veterans along with words of thanks on large red, white and blue stars.
Prior to the Veterans Day celebration at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11 outside the Caf, the stars will be “staked” on wooden dowels along the sidewalks from Alumni Hall to Pedestrian Street to honor those who have dedicated their lives to serving their fellow Americans. While dining on delicious cake provided by Meme’s Brick Street Bakery in Clinton, attendees can take photos and send social media messages of gratitude in front of a large patriotic backdrop created for the event.
Teresa Hill, director of military and veteran student services in the MC Office of the Registrar, said the Veterans Day event is intended to involve all departments and schools on MC’s campus.
“The liberties we enjoy as Americans are due to a long lineage of individuals who have made sacrifices for the freedoms that we have,” Hill said. “Even if they’re not related to a veteran, almost everyone knows someone who has served.
“It’s important on Veterans Day to recognize those who have served in our military.”
She said MC’s vision and values align perfectly with those of the U.S. military.
“Service members are dedicated to laying down their lives, if necessary, for their fellow man,” she said. “You can’t serve in the military unless you have a heart for service.
“That falls in line with MC, a university that provides an excellent education while demonstrating a commitment to serving God and others.”
