Taylor Stringer Elected SGA President

Mississippi College’s newly elected Student Government Association president is business administration major Taylor Stringer of Tylertown.

Stringer, 21, who also serves as vice president of the Christian university’s new clay shooting club, will serve as the SGA’s leader for 2011-2012. He and other newly elected student officers were voted in during elections on the Clinton campus in late March.

Stringer previously served as president of MC’s freshman class and sophomore class. He jumped on board when MC launched its clay shooting club in the fall. MC students recently traveled to San Antonio, Texas for clay shooting competition against college teams from around the nation.

Mississippi College is a big part of the Stringer family. His parents, Tony and Carla Stringer, are both 1983 MC graduates.

Asked what he loves about MC, Taylor Stringer said,” I like the people and going to class, I know everyone I pass by.”

Taylor grew up going to MC Choctaws football games and attending Homecoming events on the Clinton campus with his parents.

Topping his priority list as SGA president is the extension of hours at the Leland Speed Library.

Asked about his summer plans, Taylor mentioned cutting grass, followed by studying abroad in South Korea in July and returning back to Mississippi to prepare for his SGA duties. He’s active in a number of MC student organizations, including the Civitan Club.

Jim Turcotte, MC’s vice president for enrollment management and student affairs, says Stringer and his classmates are well suited for the assignment as they take the reins of student government.

“Every year we have students elected to SGA who are talented and dedicated to the mission of the university,” Turcotte said. “Once again we have outstanding students elected to office.”

As the incoming SGA president, Stringer has been “visible on campus since his freshman year. He brings much experience to the job,” Turcotte said. “We look forward to another great year working closely with the SGA.”

Other new student leaders include SGA vice president Amanda Sturniolo of Greenwood; Steven Oxner of Memphis, the chairman of the Campus Activities Board; chief justice Marianna Fountain of Forest; and treasurer Colbie Robertson of Franklinton, La. Others include Turner Brown of Jackson, the leader of the men’s affairs board, Valerie Cox of Olive Branch, who heads the women’s affairs board, and SGA secretary Holly Mallalieu of Plant City, Florida.

The student government chief of staff will be named at a later date, Stringer said.
