Why study in China?

There are many good reasons, but here are the top three:

  • China has the largest population in the world—over 1.4 billion people. In addition to the Chinese people in continental China, Mandarin Chinese is also spoken by people living in Taiwan, Singapore and other parts of the world. If you speak English and Mandarin Chinese, you can communicate with over half the world's population.
  • China is becoming an economic superpower. Knowing Chinese will give you an edge in the future job market.
  • Learning Chinese is an extraordinary and exciting experience through which you can immerse yourself in a different culture.

When is the program offered?

Students attend the summer program for 3 weeks in June or July. Upon completion of courses, students can opt for extended travel time before returning to the states.

When do students apply?

The deadline for the summer program is the middle of February. However, interested students should contact the Mac Center (maccenter@mc.edu) early in the semester for specific application information.

Who is eligible to participate?

All students, regardless of major, are eligible. There is no language requirement for the summer program.

What courses are offered?

Students can receive credit for up to 6 hours of Chinese or MLG credit in Chinese culture, 1 hour of P.E. and 1 credit of chapel.

Are the course credits “MC credits” or do they transfer into MC?

Mississippi College has “partner institutions” in China. This means that students enroll at MC and register as if they were taking courses on-campus. The courses that they will actually take in China correspond to course numbers offered here. That way, students earn MC credit while learning abroad. There is no risk in losing credits trough transferring hours.

Does the program include excursions to other cities?

The summer program cost does include guided excursions. There is a tour in Beijing at the beginning of the program and several tours in the surrounding area. Students may choose to travel independently, as well, to other parts Asia upon completing the coursework.

Where do students live?

Students live in university housing on campus with other international students from around the world.

How much does the program cost?

Each summer the program costs vary, but are comparable to studying on campus at MC.  The program costs include tuition at MC and in China, housing, and planned excursions. The program cost does not include airfare and independent travel. Specific details about program costs are discussed in orientation meetings with the program director. Meetings occur early in the spring semester.

Is financial aid available?

MC scholarship money does not apply during the summer. Students should contact a financial aid counselor to learn if any other part of their financial aid packages will apply.
