This program, which dates from 1960, involves a direct exchange of students between Mississippi College and Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. MC offers a full scholarship to a student from the American Studies Division of Mainz University.  In turn, the German university provides the M.C. student with a stipend which covers fees, and room and board.

When is the program offered?

Exchange students remain at the respective universities for two semesters.  Mainz University has a “Winter Semester” (October through mid- February) and a “Summer Semester” (April through July).

When do MC students apply?

Since only one scholarship is available, a committee will make the final selection in the event there are multiple applications. Applications will begin early January for the following school year. All students interested should contact the Mac Center (maccenter@mc.edu) early in the semester prior to the semester they are wishing to study abroad.

Who is eligible to apply for the scholarship?

Candidates must have completed at least four semesters of college-level work, as well as the equivalent of four semesters of college-level German. Students currently enrolled in GER 202 will also be considered. Students from all majors may apply.

What courses are offered?

The University of Mainz is a large institution offering courses in many disciplines. Students from MC usually continue their study of German while in Mainz, but may also enroll for credit or audit courses in other disciplines as well. Most courses are taught in German except for those in the areas of British Studies and American Studies.  Please see the MC director of this program for assistance in selecting courses.

Are the course credits MC credits or transfer credits?

Any credits received in Mainz will be transfer credits.  Students are not enrolled at MC while studying at the University of Mainz.

Do students have the opportunity to travel while enrolled at the German university?

University students in Germany enjoy a two-month break between semesters.  This break gives the MC student time to travel extensively in Germany or other parts of Europe.

Where do students live while in Mainz?

Students are housed in dormitories on or near the campus of the University of Mainz. Kitchen facilities are available in most dormitories, and several cafeterias on campus offer low-cost meals.

How much does the program cost?

After arriving in Germany, the MC exchange student will receive a stipend currently equivalent to about $520 per month for ten months.  From this stipend the student pays the University of Mainz a fee of $400 each semester and room rent of $400 per month.  Students should have personal funds available for any additional expenses. Travel expenses are not covered by the scholarship.

Is other financial aid available?

MC scholarships and other forms of financial aid may not be applied since the student is not enrolled at MC or a university in the U.S.
