Founding Head of The Redeemer's School, Chair of Jackson Prep's Science Department Join MC Faculty

DeSean K. Dyson, M.Ed.

DeSean K. Dyson, founding head of school at The Redeemer’s School in Jackson and an MC alum, has joined the Mississippi College faculty as an assistant professor of teacher education and leadership.

Dr. Stephanie Henderson, assistant professor and chair of the Department of Teacher Education and Leadership at MC, said Dyson is a welcome addition to the Christian University.

“We are pleased to have Mr. Dyson as a part of the Teacher Education and Leadership faculty,” Henderson said. “His work to expand the reach of the University will surely be a blessing for all that are a part of the MC Family.”

After receiving his B.A. in history from Belhaven University in 2006, Dyson obtained his M.Ed. in educational leadership at MC.

Dyson began his career as a U.S. history/American government teacher and varsity football coach at Clinton High School and adjunct professor at Belhaven University from 2006-12. He served as an assistant principal at Carver Middle School/Raymond Freshman Academy from 2012-14 before founding The Redeemer School in 2014 and serving as head of school from 2014-21.

A contributing author of the book, “Fighting the Good Fight: National Narratives of the African-American Principalship Experience,” Dyson has served on the Board of Trustees of Leadership Greater Jackson. A highly sought speaker, he has given numerous invited presentations at academic institutions throughout the Southeast. He is an elected and ordained deacon of Redeemer Church PCA in Jackson.

Katherine T. Horlock, Ed.D.

Dr. Katherine T. Horlock has joined the Mississippi College faculty as an assistant professor of teacher education and leadership.

Dr. Stephanie Henderson, assistant professor and chair of the Department of Teacher Education and Leadership at MC, said Horlock has been an “extremely valuable addition” to the department.

“Her firsthand knowledge of effective instructional practices and the integration of technology into today’s classroom is superb,” Henderson said. “She brings an energy and fresh perspective that fits perfectly within the department and the University.”

After receiving her B.A. in elementary education in 2011 and her M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction in 2012 from the University of Mississippi, Horlock served as a science teacher at Saint Joseph Catholic School from 2012-14 before joining the Jackson Preparatory School faculty. At Jackson Prep, Horlock served as a science instructor, grade level coordinator, and chair of the science department. She also worked with curriculum development and implementation at Jackson Prep.

Horlock obtained her Ed.S. in educational leadership and administration from Delta State University in 2016 and her Ed.D. in educational leadership from Belhaven University in 2020. She completed her dissertation on immersive virtual reality instructional methods.

A member of the National Science Teaching Association, she also participates in many community activities through the Junior League of Jackson and volunteers with the Mississippi Children’s Museum to promote the education of students in the community. Horlock has been recognized as a member of Madison the City’s “Top 10 under 40.”
